Class of 2026
Charlie Murphy

Charlie Murphy's place in New York golf was earned the hard way — through decades of elite competition, a landmark collegiate career at Siena, and a championship pedigree that kept him among the state's best players for the better part of thirty years.
Murphy first made his mark at Siena College, where he became one of the most decorated golfers in program history. He won the Northeastern Collegiate Conference Championship as a freshman and the Capital City Tournament as a sophomore, then claimed the MECAA Individual Championship in both his junior and senior seasons. A three-time MECAA individual medalist, he qualified for the ECAC Championship in 1966 and helped Siena capture the MECAA team title in 1967. As captain, he led teams to 14- and 15-win seasons in his junior and senior years and earned an individual berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament. His contributions were ultimately recognized with induction into the Siena College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
What followed was one of the most durable amateur careers New York has seen. Murphy played in 30 consecutive NYS Men's Amateur Championships and recorded 14 top-10 finishes between 1967 and 1994 — a remarkable measure of sustained excellence. He twice finished runner-up at the NYS Men's Amateur, in 1977 and again in 1985, and reached the top of state competition in 1984 by winning the NYS Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, securing his place in NYSGA championship history.
His dominance ran deep at the regional level as well. Murphy won the Eastern New York Golf Association Championship six times and the Tri-County Stroke Play Championship six times, added three Tri-County Match Play titles, and collected three Country Club of Troy Invitational crowns and two Country Club of Rochester Invitational titles. His game also carried him onto the national and international stage: he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur in 1964, advancing to the second round, and later earned berths in the U.S. Mid-Amateur (1983), the U.S. Amateur (1984 and 1986), and the British Amateur (1984).
A Siena legend, a NYSGA champion, and a fixture of New York competitive golf across four decades, Charlie Murphy embodies the consistency, commitment and quiet excellence that define the game's finest amateurs. His career earns him his rightful place in the New York State Golf Association Hall of Fame.
